Història:
Ha estat la principal sala de concerts de la ciutat durant el segle XX. Va ser encarregada per l'Orfeó Català com a seu de la institució i auditori de música clàssica a l’arquitecte modernista Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Va ser construïda entre els anys 1905 i 1908 al barri de Sant Pere i sufragada per subscripció, principalment de la classe industrial barcelonina. Amb els anys, l'edifici ha estat reconegut com una de les grans mostres del modernisme català com ho va reconèixer la UNESCO en declarar-la Patrimoni de la Humanitat el 1997. Ha estat el lloc d'estrena d'importants obres de la música clàssica occidental com, per exemple, el Concert per a violí a la memòria d'un àngel d'Alban Berg, i un nombre molt important d'obres del patrimoni musical català del segle XX. De 1944 fins a 1999 va ser la seu de l'Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, i segueix sent un decisiu focus d'activitat musical concertística de la ciutat. Com a seu social, l'Orfeó Català hi ofereix els principals concerts i, el 1990, va crear la formació en residència del Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana. L'edifici també acull l'Escola Coral de l'Orfeó Català i el Centre de Documentació de l’Orfeó Català.

Nom artístic amb el que es coneix la soprano catalana Concepció Badia i Millàs. Deixebla d’Enric Granados i Rosa Culmell, destacà com a pianista, però decidí dedicar-se al cant. L’any 1913 féu el debut al Palau de la Música Catalana en el paper de noia-flor del Parsifal de Richard Wagner en versió concert, al costat de Francesc Viñas. Aquell debut fou el punt de partida per a una brillant carrera i perquè un gran nombre de compositors li escrivissin obres, pensades per a ella (Enric Granados, Jaume Pahissa, Robert Gerhard, Pau Casals entre d’altres). Entre els anys 1915 i 1930 cantà arreu d’Europa. Decidí exiliar-se i, així, entre els anys 1938 i 1946 residí al Brasil i Argentina on col.laborà amb compositors com H. Villa-Lobos i Manuel de Falla. De retorn, el 1947, fou professora de cant del Conservatori Superior Municipal de Música de Barcelona a més de realitzar diferents cursos d’interpretació vocal arreu del món.

Filla de Joan Balcells García i germana de Rosa Balcells. Va iniciar els estudis musicals a l'Escola Municipal de Música de Barcelona, amb Tomàs Buxó. El 1947 fou admesa com a professora auxiliar en aquesta institució i deu anys més tard va obtenir una plaça titular de docència pianística. L'any 1978 participà en la creació de l'Escola de Música de l'Orfeó Gracienc, on va ser professora fins al curs 1984-85.
Fou molt apreciada com a pianista de repertori vocal, protagonitzant concerts amb els cantants Conxita Badia, Mercè Capsir, Manuel Ausensi i Emili Vendrell, i amb els instrumentistes Joan Manén, Josep Trotta, Enric Ribó i Rosa Balcells.
Alguns dels seus deixebles van ser Jordi Vilaprinyó, Lluís Vidal, Delfí Colomé, Mª José Fernández o Mercè Puntí.

El 1924 abandonà l’escena per dedicar-se exclusivament als recitals. Manuel de Falla la va escollir, el 1930, per a enregistrar les Siete canciones españolas. Fou catedràtica de cant al Teatro Colón.

Considerat un nen prodigi, va rebre les seves primeres lliços musicals de Joan Massià i Eduard Toldrà, i després amb Joaquim Zamacois i Emili Pujol. Es va presentar davant del públic el 1947, al Palau de la Música Catalana, com a pianista-compositor. El 1949 es va traslladar a París per estudiar amb Nadia Boulanger a qui el 1979 va succeir en la direcció del Conservatoire Américain de Fontainebleau. Va destacar, de forma especial, en el camp de la pedagogia als més prestigiosos centres de París: professor al Conservatori de París des de 1971, a l’Schola Cantorum i director adjunt de l'École Normale de Musique. En paral·lel, va dedicar-se a la composició amb obres destacades com el Concert per a violoncel i orquestra (1959) o La pell de brau (1967), sobre els poemes de Salvador Espriu. Va ser guardonat amb diversos premis de composició (Fundació Copley de Chicago, Fundació March, Prince Rainier III de Mónaco).

Es va presentar davant del públic el 1947, al Palau de la Música Catalana, com a pianista-compositor. El 1949 es va traslladar a París per estudiar amb Nadia Boulanger a qui el 1979 va succeir en la direcció del Conservatoire Américain de Fontainebleau. Va destacar, de forma especial, en el camp de la pedagogia als més prestigiosos centres de París: professor al Conservatori de París des de 1971, a l’Schola Cantorum i director adjunt de l'École Normale de Musique. En paral·lel, va dedicar-se a la composició amb obres destacades com el Concert per a violoncel i orquestra (1959) o La pell de brau (1967), sobre els poemes de Salvador Espriu. Va ser guardonat amb diversos premis de composició (Fundació Copley de Chicago, Fundació March, Prince Rainier III de Mónaco).

Del seu impuls sorgí la celebració, el 1936, del Festival de la SIMC a Barcelona. El 1939 decidí exiliar-se i, el juny d’aquest any, s’establí a Cambridge gràcies a un ajut de la universitat on romangué fins a la seva mort. El 1968 fou nomenat doctor honoris causa per la Universitat de Cambridge. La seva obra és, a judici de la crítica, el màxim exponent de la música catalana del segle XX." Al seu retorn a Barcelona el 1907 fou professor d'orgue a l'Orfeó Català i organista a l'església de Pompeia, i amb l'orquestra Pau Casals. També va dedicar bona part del seu temps als escrits de crítica i reflexió musical, destacant les col·laboracions amb la "Revista Musical Catalana", "La Vanguardia", les traduccións al "Diccionario de la música ilustrado" i les notes als programes de mà de l'Associació de Música de Cambra. Com a compositor va escriure principalment música vocal de caràcter religiós o popular. Cal destacar la seva participació en l'estrena catalana de la "Passió segons Sant Mateu" de Bach amb l'Orfeó Català i de la "Missa solemnis" de Beethoven amb l'Orquestra Pau Casals." Va ser professor de piano a l’Institut Musical Casals i a l’Escola Municipal de Música de Barcelona. Entre d’altres músics, va fer duos amb Pau Casals, Gaspar Cassadó, Francesc Costa, Joan Massià i Jacques Thibaud. Entre el seu repertori de concert destaca la integral de sonates i de sonates per a trio de Beethoven.

Iniciat en la vida musical de la seva vila natal i molt dotat musicalment, va estudiar entre d'altres, amb Josep Barberà i va ampliar estudis amb Isidor Philipp a París. Catedràtic de piano, per oposicions, del Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu, va impartir multitud d'assignatures fins arribar a ser-ne nomenat director pedagògic tot desenvolupant una important tasca. Segons els annals és el pianista que més vegades ha actuat al Palau de la Música com a solista i acompanyant grups de cambra i orquestra. Es calcula que va actuar-hi en més de 250 ocasions. Va acompanyar a importants noms de l'escena musical europea com ara Conxita Badia, Renata tebaldi, Eduard Toldrà, Montserrat Caballé o Jean Pierre-Rampal, entre molts altres.
Va ser una personalitat important de la música catalana del segle XX. Va compondre algunes peces musicals on en sobresurten un bon nombre de sardanes, nadales, goigs i cançons.
