He was a pupil of Francesc Andreví in the choir of the chapel of Santa Maria del Mar, and in 1818 he was admited at the Escolania de Montserrat. Later, after his return to Barcelona, he studied with Francesc Queralt and Mateu Ferrer. In 1830, he moved to Madrid where he was appointed professor of Music Reading (lenguaje musical) at the Conservatorio Reina Cristina. From 1850 onwards, he compiled the historical data necessary for the publication of his Efemérides de músicos españoles in 1860 while he started working in the four volumes of his Diccionario biográfico-bibliográfico (1868-1881). Up until the 1860s he composed various operas such as Ipermestra (1838), which got him to be compared to Vincenzo Bellini. During his lifetime, he was renowned for his religious music, such as his Stabat Mater (1842).
